Ecosystem-based approaches to reducing disaster risk

Restored catchments, wetlands and coasts can reduce hazard impact when they are paired with land-use decisions and local institutions.
Climate change, degraded ecosystems and unsafe development can all increase the impact of floods, landslides and cyclones. Treating disaster management and environmental management as separate conversations misses that connection.
Nature-based measures are not a substitute for warning systems or emergency operations. They are part of the same programme: land and water management, environmental governance, and the institutions that make those choices stick.
